Jane Bassuk’s textiles are on display in our Universal Gallery Sept. 11 through Oct. 16. She will be available to talk about her work after services on September 25.
Much of Jane Bassuk’s work explores how energy and light are integral to natural and man-made architecture. In her art quilts, she has always created surreal landscapes that use organic shapes derived from the flora and fauna of the natural world. She uses different types of textures to develop the surface and experiment with color to create different light effects. Her works continually investigate the power of nature over man-made structures. She chooses fabrics because of the feelings they evoke and for their implied glimpses of land, sea, and man-made objects. She heavily embellishes each piece with embroidery and beads to enhance the surfaces. Jane also examines feminine sexuality and her Jewish heritage, exploring loss, spirituality, human mortality, and human connection to the infinite universe.
Jane Bassuk has a BFA in painting from the University of Michigan and an MA and MFA in painting from the University of Iowa. She taught at North Hennepin Community College and is now retired. For more information visit her website: www.janebassukartist.com

9-10:15 a.m. online and at church in Room 209
We are a lay-led group- none of us are experts. Our practices come from our own experiences, and we share a variety of sources. We don’t follow one method or another, but we do share what we learn with each other. After meditation we practice deep listening to hear from each person, if they choose. Once a month on the second Tuesday we have a Learning Session and continue until 11 am. We continue all year, every week, and are always open to new members. Contact Sara McMullen (saramcminneapolis@gmail.com) to be added to the contact list. Facilitated by Sara McMullen and Sherry Merriam.

Building Community is the responsibility of the individual and the collective! Sunday welcome teams practice “welcome” as a spiritual practice together. Who are we welcoming to church, and how can we welcome them warmly and authentically? What does it mean to bring and welcome ourselves to church? What does welcome feel like as a practice rather than a goal? Welcome Teams practice welcome and hospitality on Sunday mornings as greeters and ushers, then gather briefly after worship to share and reflect on themes and questions about welcome, relationship, culture, friendship, and belonging. Facilitated by Membership Coordinator Liz Farmer and eventually shared among group members.
Is there a practice you’d like to facilitate that’s not represented here? Please reach out to ashley@firstuniv.org.
