Invitation to Mutual Mentorships Pilot at First Universalist

News –

Are you longing for intergenerational relationships? Would you be nourished by growing alongside people in a different life stage? Do you want to be mentored by people younger, older, or just different from your primary social group?

We are, too! Check out First Universalist’s “Mutual Mentorships.” This program emerges from our belief that learning flows in all directions in all relationships. We’ve heard a desire from people of all ages for more intergenerational relationships at church, so we’re creating a way to give them a boost.

Here’s where you come in:

  • Fill out this interest form to be part of our pilot Mutual Mentorships project. The form asks you to share what sort of mentorship relationship you are seeking.
    • For our pilot this summer, we’re looking for 10 volunteer units (individuals or families) for a total of 5 mutual mentorships.
  • We (staff and volunteers) will do our best to match mentor units with each other based on their hopes as expressed on the form.
  • We’ll host a potluck kickoff in May (pre-Memorial Day) and do some grounding, orienting, connecting, and give space for mentors (including kids in families!) to have initial conversations/interactions.
  • We’ll encourage mentors to meetup with each other at least once a month in June, July, and August. This could be anything: a walk or trip to the playground after church; dropping off a meal after a surgery; cooking dinner together; a joint Costco trip; etc. We’ll brainstorm possible meet-up options together and each mentor pair will set a date for their first connection at the kickoff in May.
  • We’ll have times for all participants in the Mutual Mentorships to connect at various points throughout the summer to share experiences.
  • We’ll reconvene as a full group in September to unpack our experience, share back, make meaning, and give some closure. We hope that, if the mentorships were a good fit, folks will continue seeing each other, but the formal commitment will end.
