Finish The Promise

News –

Nearly ten years ago, First Universalist members united to renovate our physical space, raising $5.5 million to repair and improve our historic Dupont Avenue building, making it more accessible, welcoming, and sustainable for all. Most notably, we transformed part of the building into an apartment that could safely and comfortably provide sanctuary to families in need. But we’re not done.

For five years First Universalist has been paying $132,000 per year for the loan we needed to complete the construction. That is money going to a bank instead of to our programming, our community partnerships, and our shared ministry. This fall our interest rate will increase, nearly doubling the amount of interest we currently pay. More money to the bank, less to the values and vision we share. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Last winter, when we asked the congregation to share their dreams for our future, the number one priority was clear: pay off the construction loan. It’s a heavy lift – $1.36 million – but, by working together, we know we can do it. We can free ourselves from bank debt and focus funds on our mission.

As of today, nearly thirty households have collectively pledged $945,429 toward the goal. More than half of that has already been donated and sent over to our bank. Our loan is shrinking with each gift.

If you’ve already given, THANK YOU. You know how good it feels to be a part of this historic effort. If you haven’t yet had a chance to participate, please join! There’s room for everyone.

In Gratitude,
