How children & youth participate
Children are always welcome to stay with their grownups in the sanctuary! We have special areas with rocking chairs, tables, fidgets and coloring supplies in the sanctuary designed just for you.
We generally offer Religious Education classes for children and youth mid-September through May. Children and youth begin their time at church in the sanctuary with their families before being excused for Religious Education classes part way through the service.
One Sunday each month (generally the 3rd Sunday of every month) is “Ritual Sunday,” with a shorter, multigenerational worship serving as our Religious Education for the day (some classes may still meet). On those Sundays, children and youth are invited to join their families and friends in worship at either the 9 or 11 a.m. service.
Ritual Sundays
Ritual Sundays are a monthly opportunity for families to worship together. These Sundays feature a dynamic, family-friendly, intergenerational, and interactive worship service. This shorter worship service takes place at both 9 & 11 a.m., followed by fellowship and connection in the Social Hall. The third Sunday of every month, October–May, will be a Ritual Sunday.
What to Expect on Ritual Sundays:
- Religious Education is in Worship: At First Universalist, we believe that participating in worship regularly is a key part of kids’ and youths’ formation in our Unitarian Universalist faith. Because we believe this so strongly, we will not hold separate classes* on Ritual Sundays. Instead, families will gather as a whole in the Sanctuary to worship together.
- Engaging Rituals: Each month, we’ll practice a new, embodied, participatory, movement-based ritual.
- Supportive, Family-Friendly Environment: Ritual Sunday services are designed to be relaxed and welcoming with families particularly in mind, with more movement and interaction than our other Sunday services. As always, we also have a designated area in the Sanctuary for families who need a bit more space, and will set up the Cummins Room with a livestream of the service for folks of any age who need to wiggle or chat.
*We will offer staffed childcare for children ages 6 mos-PreK in room 104. Some specified classes may meet—refer to your Family E-News or communications from the Children, Youth & Families Ministry. Reach out to Allison with class schedule questions (allison [at] firstuniv [dot] org.)
