CANCELLED: “Race: The Power of an Illusion” Screening
Please note: First Universalist Church has suspended all in-person gatherings in the building effective March 13 until at least the end of the month. Read about this decision here.
If viewing race as a “social construct” is a new idea to you, this is a great opportunity to unlearn some powerful myths. “Race: The Power of an Illusion” challenges the belief that humans come divided into a few distinct biological groups. This definitive series is an eye opening tale of how what many assume to be normal or even scientific, is actually shaped by history, social institutions, and cultural beliefs. Episode 1 examines contemporary science — including genetics — that challenges assumptions about human groups. Episode 2 explores the roots of the race concept, including the 19th century science that justified it and how it gained a hold over our minds.
Please join our Racial Justice Education Team (RJET) for a screening of Episodes 1 and 2, followed by a discussion facilitated by members of RJET. This is a drop-in event; light snacks will be provided.
