Enrich your spiritual life by joining a Circle this winter! Circles are groups of 8–10 committed participants who come together with a trained leader to nurture spiritual growth in community. Additionally, a wide variety of racial justice learning opportunities, from Spiritual Deepening Circles to workshops to book discussions and film screenings, are being offered this winter, as well as monthly programming for older adults (Daytime Connections) and young adults. Information about all of these offerings is available in our Winter 2018 Adult Programming Catalog (also available to pick up outside the sanctuary on Sundays). Registration for Circles is now open online at firstucircles.weebly.com.
Circles are groups of 8-10 committed participants who come together with a trained leader to nurture spiritual growth in community. These groups are grounded in the spiritual practices of deep listening and open-hearted reflection. Each gathering offers an opportunity for connection: connecting with ourselves, connecting with others, and connecting with something greater than ourselves.
This fall, registration is open Sept. 10–Oct. 1 online at firstucircles.weebly.com and in the Social Hall on Sundays.
We offer three kinds of Circles: Soul Matters Circles, Spiritual Deepening Circles, and Newcomer Circles. Current offerings are available at the links. Learn more about Soul Matters Circles below!
Over the past two years, we have been getting to know Soul Matters, a small group curriculum that encourages participants to reflect more deeply on our monthly worship theme. Last spring, our community of facilitators decided to adopt Soul Matters as the core circle format at First Universalist. We hope that you will dive in and discover all that this soulful curriculum has to offer.
How do Soul Matters Circles work?
At the start of each month, you will receive a packet of resources to help you go deeper with the worship theme. It includes poems, articles, YouTube videos, and more. This packet is your go-to text as you meet with your group and attend services throughout the month. The packet also includes questions for contemplation and spiritual exercises that invite you into deeper relationship with our worship theme.
Which Soul Matters Circle is for Me?
We are offering two types of Soul Matters Circles this year. One meets for a shorter duration, with greater frequency, and asks no preparation. The other meets for a longer duration, with less frequency, and has simple preparation exercises. Which one is for you?
Set some time aside to engage with life’s deeper themes: Join a circle this summer! These gatherings of 8-10 people are a great way to get connected at First Universalist and to stay spiritually grounded throughout the summer.
Offerings this summer include: four Community Circles, Newcomer Circles, and three Spiritual Deepening Circles including Meditation for Teachers, Chi-Gung, and Lectio Divina. View descriptions and schedules here.
Registration for summer circles opens this Sunday, May 7, and will be open through Monday, May 22. You may register online or in the Social Hall on Sundays, May 7, 14 or 21. For more information, contact Rev. Elaine Aron Tenbrink at elaine@firstuniv.org or 612

On Sunday, April 30, First Universalist Church of Minneapolis will join more than 400 Unitarian Universalist congregations/communities in shifting our regularly scheduled Sunday morning worship to participate in a teach-in on racism and white supremacy, known as #UUWhiteSupremacyTeachIn. This call to action comes from a growing network led by UUs of color and white UUs working together. You won’t want to miss participating with thousands of UUs around the country in this large-scale historic action!
Our youth-friendly worship services will take place as scheduled – on Sunday, April 30 at 9:30 and 11:15 a.m. – and will take the form of a worshipful teach-in with special guest performers and speakers. Watch for more information about how First Universalist is participating in the coming weeks, and read more about the national movement here.
