“A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota” Book Discussion
In this provocative book, sixteen of Minnesota’s best writers provide a range of perspectives on what it is like to live as a person of color in Minnesota. They give readers the gift of touching another human being’s inner reality, behind masks and veils and politeness. They bring us generously into experiences that we must understand if we are to come together in real relationships. In preparation, participants will be asked to read 5–6 of the essays (approximately 70 pages) in “A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota.”
For the discussion on Thursday, Dec. 1 (7–8:30 p.m.), participants are asked to prepare in advance by reading the last five essays (pages 157–223). RSVPs are appreciated to Sandy at sandy@firstuniv.org, but drop-ins are welcome!
Book discussion sessions about the other essays in the book will be held on Thursdays, Oct. 13 and Nov. 3, 7–8:30 p.m. You are welcome to attend just one or two or all three!
Discussion leaders: Polly Talen is a retired foundation executive, a founding member of our Racial Justice Leadership Team, and long-time First Universalist member. Margaret Manderfeld joined First Universalist specifically because of our commitment to racial justice. Both have received training to facilitate racial justice programming.
